At DSE MBA Business Analytics, we are committed to providing students with real-world insights that bridge the gap between theory and practice. Our Minds on Mic guest lecture series is an initiative designed to bring industry experts to share their knowledge and experiences with aspiring business analysts. On February 10, we hosted an insightful session with Abrar Wasta, an esteemed alumnus of our program, who discussed economic concepts and data analysis, offering valuable perspectives on how these factors impact business decision-making.
Understanding Economic Indicators for Business Analysts
Economic indicators play a crucial role in helping analysts interpret data and make informed decisions. Abrar Wasta elaborated on key macroeconomic indicators such as inflation, GDP, and fiscal deficit, emphasizing their significance in shaping economic policies and business strategies. He explained how the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) utilizes monetary tools like repo rate adjustments and open market operations to manage inflation and regulate the money supply. Additionally, he highlighted India’s ongoing shift from a government expenditure-driven economy to a consumer expenditure-driven growth model, a transformation that holds immense potential for businesses and analysts alike.
The Fundamentals of Money and Currency
Money serves multiple functions in an economy—it acts as a medium of exchange, a measure of value, a store of value, and a means of deferred payment. Wasta discussed how currency value is now largely based on economic fundamentals and trust, rather than being backed by gold, making it fiat money. The session also covered the depreciation of the Indian Rupee (INR)—which has declined by nearly 6% against the USD over the past year—highlighting its effects on imports, exports, and overall economic stability.
India’s GDP and Growth Projections
India’s current GDP stands at approximately $4.27 trillion, with an ambitious goal to reach $5 trillion in the near future. Wasta outlined different methods of GDP calculation, including the expenditure approach, factor flow, and money flow models, offering a comprehensive understanding of how economic growth is measured. With India projected to overtake Germany as the third-largest economy within the next 4-5 years at a steady 6.25% growth rate, he stressed the importance of businesses adapting to a consumer-driven economy.
Inflation, Monetary Policy, and Fiscal Deficit
As of December 2024, India's CPI inflation stands at 5.22%, remaining within the RBI’s target range of 2-6%. Despite concerns over inflation, the RBI recently reduced the repo rate by 25 basis points to 6.25%, a move intended to stimulate consumer spending. Wasta explained how monetary policy tools like cash reserve ratio (CRR), statutory liquidity ratio (SLR), and open market operations are employed to control liquidity and maintain economic stability.
On the fiscal front, India’s fiscal deficit is currently around 4.4% of GDP, with a long-term goal of bringing it below 3%. A high fiscal deficit often leads to increased government borrowing and higher interest payments, making fiscal prudence essential for sustainable economic growth. The challenge for policymakers lies in striking the right balance between welfare spending and financial stability.
The Role of Data Analysis in Business Analytics
The session emphasized that business analysts must develop strong data interpretation and visualization skills to enhance employability and decision-making capabilities. Tools like Power BI and Excel are instrumental in analyzing economic trends and crafting insightful reports. Wasta encouraged students to explore global data sources such as World Bank reports and RBI economic bulletins to strengthen their understanding of economic indicators.
Practical Application: India’s Solar Sector Report
To reinforce the concepts discussed in the session, students have been assigned a data-driven report on India's solar sector. This project requires students to analyze:
India’s progress toward its 100 GW solar energy milestone
Government policies and incentives promoting solar energy adoption
10-year growth trends and comparisons with global markets
Challenges and opportunities within the solar industry
The role of key industry players, both listed and unlisted
The focus is on data visualization, logical flow, and actionable insights, providing students with practical exposure to economic and business analytics.
Our Minds on Mic session with Abrar Wasta was a deep dive into the intricate relationship between economic principles and data analysis. By understanding and leveraging economic indicators, aspiring business analysts can enhance their analytical acumen and gain a competitive edge in the industry.
Stay tuned for more engaging discussions in our upcoming DSE Minds on Mic sessions!
